Why Should I Attend?

In the years since John Tagg and co-author Robert Barr presented their influential Change article about the need for higher education to move from the instruction paradigm to the learning paradigm, evidence has mounted that this approach is not just preferable but necessary. Regional accreditors now focus on student learning outcomes as a key measure of institutional effectiveness, a shift completely in line with the learning-centered paradigm.

In this event, John will: 1.) help clarify your understanding of the learning paradigm; 2.) explain and demonstrate why it's better for you, your students, and your institution; and, 3.) enable you to explain this dramatic shift to colleagues in terms of better student outcomes. John has studied the learning paradigm's impact on higher education, examined its many permutations at multiple colleges and universities, and walks his talk as a Palomar College professor. Whether you attend only the meal with keynote or both the prior conversation and the keynote, you will enjoy John's engaging and witty presentation. It will be a delightful way to share collegially with the purpose of improving higher education.

Overview

The Conversations with John Tagg event is being offered on two separate dates:

Small Group Conversation 4:00 p.m. - 6 p.m.
Meal & Keynote 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
or
Saturday, October 6th, 2007
Small Group Conversation 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Meal & Keynote 12:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.

Whether you choose to participate on Friday or Saturday, Conversations with John Tagg allows you to attend either a small group discussion with John (limited to 40 attendees) or a plated-meal keynote presentation afterwards (limited to 180), or both. Light snacks accompany the small group conversation, which is an informal, collegial discussion about the learning paradigm and its application. Following some time for good food and networking in small groups around dining tables, John's keynote address to the gathering will be an interactive and thought-provoking learning-centered experience adding substance and detail to your consideration of the learning paradigm.

About John Tagg

John Tagg is Professor of English at Palomar College in San Marcos, California. He is coauthor, with Robert B. Barr, of “From Teaching to Learning: A New Paradigm for Undergraduate Education” (Change, 1995), which quickly became the most cited piece in Change's history due to the article's lucid evaluation of teaching and learning in higher education and its paradigmatic yet specific recommendations for helping the academy become more successful in creating student learning. For the past several years he has conducted workshops and made presentations at many colleges and universities on organizational transformation and the Learning Paradigm.
